Expiring and Dropped Domains
Domain names are registered for a set number of years. They are normally registered for just 1 or 2 years but it is possible to register them for up to 10.
If a domain registration period is coming up to an end it is referred to as an 'Expiring Domain'. If the domain name is not renewed, the domain name is
said to have dropped. There are thousands of great domain names which drop every day. Some of them are good, some of them are not. Many of these domain names were
previously sites and so have incoming traffic to the domain name. Traffic is a great way to make revenue from a domain name. The domain
itself may be of a great value as well. For example, some 3 letter .com domain names sell for over $1000.00.
There are sites which display the domain names which will be released soon or have been released. These sites normally charge for the
privilege of viewing these lists. While there are sites which do not charge for this
(most notably DeletedDomains), most of these sites tend not to be as up to date. To catch a domain you want which you saw in an expired domains list, you need a site to 'Catch' the domain for you. Catcher sites try and
register the domain for you as soon as it is released from the registrar. While in theory it is possible to catch a domain without using
a catching site, the chances of it happening are extremely slim since their scripts check for it releasing 24/7.
Here is a list of some of the expiring domain :-
- DomainsBot : Very reliable drop list site which also has a great search facility for expiring and dropping domains.
- DeletedDomains : The most popular free expiring list site on the web.
- Domain Retriever : Domain name expiring list software.
- DomainPond : Expired, on-hold and expiring soon domain name search and reporting tools.
- NicGenie : Expiring domain lists.
- SnapNames : Snapnames allows to to back order a domain for $69.00 a year. Very popular.
- NameWinner : Owned by Dotster, this catch site has become very popular since you only pay if they get the domain name for you.
- ExpireFish : A reliable catching site.
- NamePursuit : Domain name grabber software.
- DropCatcher : Similar to NameWinner, you only pay if they catch the domain for you.
- NameAlerts : Quality back ordering domain name site.
Domain Reselling
Many domain companies allow you to resell domains through them. There is usually a yearly fee charged to you to do this plus a small fee per domain registered. The two most popular reseller companies are eNom and WildWestDomains. WildWestDomains is the company which owns Godaddy.
Both companies charge around $100.00 per year to become a reseller although eNom is by far the better company to resell domains through. Whilst WildWest have fantastic support and a good control panel, they lag behind enom in many areas including ease of transfer of names and also reputation within the domain industry. Domain reselling is a large topic - if you want to learn more about reselling we reccomend dropping by a specialist domain name forum like DNForum.
