Before we look at the places at where you can register domains, let us first look at what extensions of domains you can register.
- The Big 3 : Com, Net and Org - The first domain extentions available were com, net and org. It was several years before other extensions were made available which is why the majority of the largest sites on the internet have one of these 3 domain extensions.
- Country Specific - More and more country domains are added each year. Examples are .us, .co.uk, .ca and ,cn. Most country specific domains have rules for registering them eg. you must be a resident of that country.
- The New Extensions - There are many other domain extensions now available. Examples are .museum, .info and ,name.
Where to register your name
There are thousands of domain registration sites on the web. Most of which are resellers for larger domain registration companies. All of the larger companies are ICANN accredited. ICANN are the giverning body for domain names.
The cost of domains range from as low as $8.00 for a domain up to over $100.00 for trademark domains. For the majority of webmasters though the major domain extensions should cost no more than around $15.00. Infact, nowadays most domain name companies charge less than $10.00.
Domains may be registered for between 1 and 10 years - the length of the registration depends on the customer though it should be noted that some domain extensions require a minimum of 2 years registration. Out of all the registers on the internet today, by far the company with the best value is eNom. We are enom resellers ourselves and sell domains for $8.15 per year through our site 815Domains. As always, the best thing to do is ask around in forums etc to see what other webmasters reccomend. Here is a list of some of the biggest registars on the web today :-
