In basic terms a domain name is used to point to a place on the internet where a website is hosted. Websites have addresses called IP Addresses - which stands for Internet Protocal Address. An IP address is a series of numbers eg. 225.889.65. Obviously remembering destinations like this is very hard for the human brain.
This is why the Domain Naming System (DNS) was developed. Each domain name points to a specific IP adress on the web. In effect, it is masking the sites true location.
